A bifold door can occupy most of one wall, so the glass will have a greater effect on comfort than almost any other element of your extension. Ask what glazing is best for bifolds, and the most useful answer is not simply “triple glazing”. The right specification needs to balance heat loss, solar gain, safety, weight, privacy and the aspect of the building.
For many UK homes, high-performance double glazing with a low-E coating, argon gas fill and warm-edge spacer bar is the strongest all-round choice. It offers excellent insulation without adding unnecessary weight to folding panels. Triple glazing can be the better option on colder, exposed sites or where very low U-values are a priority, but it should be specified as part of a compatible aluminium bifold system rather than chosen in isolation.
What glazing is best for bifolds? Start with performance
The glass area of a bifold installation is substantial, even where the aluminium frame has a thermal break. That means the glazing specification has a direct bearing on how warm the room feels near the doors, how much sunlight enters, and how hard the heating system has to work in winter.
A quality sealed unit normally combines several elements: panes of glass, a gas-filled cavity, a perimeter spacer and performance coatings. Low-emissivity, or low-E, glass has a microscopically thin coating designed to reflect heat back into the room. Argon between the panes slows heat transfer, while a warm-edge spacer reduces heat loss and condensation risk around the edge of each unit.
When comparing quotations, look beyond a single headline U-value. A centre-pane figure describes the glass itself, whereas a whole-door U-value takes the frame, glazing, seals and panel arrangement into account. High-performance double glazing: the practical default

When triple glazing is worth considering
Triple glazing adds another pane and cavity, reducing heat loss further. It can be a good fit for highly insulated self-builds, rural properties exposed to wind, north-facing elevations, or projects working towards demanding fabric performance targets.
There are trade-offs. Triple-glazed units are heavier and thicker, which affects maximum panel sizes, hinge loading and the practical number of panels in a bifold arrangement. A larger opening may need a system with sufficient sash capacity and a design that keeps individual leaves within approved limits. This is one reason glazing should be selected alongside the door system, not after the opening layout has been fixed.
Triple glazing may also reduce light transmission slightly. That is rarely a concern in a bright, open garden elevation, but it can matter in a room already shaded by neighbouring buildings, deep overhangs or a north-facing garden. It can cost more too, so the extra performance should solve a real project need rather than follow a blanket rule.

Solar-control glass for sunny rooms
A south- or west-facing wall can become uncomfortable long before winter heat loss becomes an issue. This is where solar-control glazing deserves serious consideration. It is designed to reduce the amount of solar energy passing through the glass, helping limit overheating and glare while retaining useful daylight.
The key measure is the g-value, sometimes called the solar factor. A lower g-value means less solar heat enters the room. That can make a dramatic difference where bifolds face a sun-trap patio, particularly if the project also includes roof lights or a lantern roof.
Solar-control glass is not automatically the best choice for every project. By reducing solar gain, it can also limit the free warmth that is welcome during cooler months. On a north-facing elevation, or in a room that receives limited daylight, standard low-E glass may deliver a brighter result. The best option depends on orientation, shading, room use and the amount of other glazing in the extension.
If you want a more neutral appearance, ask about the visible light transmission as well as the solar factor. Some solar-control coatings have a subtle tint or reflectivity, while others are designed to look closer to clear glass. Seeing a sample alongside your chosen frame colour is worthwhile, especially with darker aluminium finishes.
Safety glass is essential, not an optional extra
Glass in doors and low-level glazing must meet the relevant safety requirements. In practice, bifold door panels use toughened safety glass, laminated safety glass, or a combination of both, depending on the position and specification.
Toughened glass is heat-treated to make it stronger than ordinary annealed glass. If it breaks, it is designed to fragment into small pieces rather than large sharp shards. Laminated glass consists of two panes bonded with an interlayer. When broken, the fragments tend to remain held in place, which can provide additional resistance against forced entry and may improve safety where containment is beneficial.
For ground-floor doors, laminated inner panes are often selected where enhanced security is a priority. It can also offer acoustic benefits, particularly when specified with an acoustic interlayer. However, acoustic performance is not achieved by laminated glass alone. Pane thickness, cavity width, glass build-up, seals and the surrounding wall construction all contribute to the final result.
Consider acoustic glazing where the location demands it
If your home is near a busy road, railway, school route or frequent night-time activity, acoustic glazing can be a valuable upgrade. The most effective units usually use asymmetric glass thicknesses, rather than identical panes, to disrupt a broader range of sound frequencies. A specialist acoustic laminate can add further improvement.
Do not expect a glass upgrade to mask every external noise source. Sound can travel through trickle vents, adjoining walls, roof construction and poorly fitted seals. Even so, correctly specified acoustic glass within a well-made aluminium door can make a noticeable difference to a living area that previously felt exposed to traffic noise.
Privacy, decoration and specialist finishes
Clear glass is usually right for garden-facing bifolds because it maximises views and natural light. For side elevations, overlooked boundaries or internal partitions, obscure, sandblasted or patterned glass can preserve privacy without blocking daylight entirely.
There are also specialist choices for particular projects, including decorative finishes, integral blinds and glass with improved resistance to bird strikes. These should be selected for a clear reason, as every additional treatment can affect cost, appearance, light levels or maintenance.
The glass must suit the complete bifold door
The best glazing performs properly only when it is fitted into a correctly specified system. Aluminium bifolds rely on thermal breaks, precision-made frames, quality gaskets and accurate installation to prevent draughts, water ingress and avoidable heat loss around the perimeter.
